Many of our patients come to our office complaining of eye pain and blurry vision following long periods of computer use. While pain and visual impairment are bothersome, both can be managed through simple lifestyle adjustments. Read on to learn some tips from our optometrist on avoiding eye strain when using a computer.

Preventing Eye Strain

Computer vision, or digital eye strain, is typically caused by the excessive use of computers and other digital devices. This condition could cause dry eyes and eye irritation. The eyes will generally water and become red and irritated, and itchy. Digital eye strain can be avoided with a few simple precautionary measures:

  • While doing computer work, take a fifteen-minute break every two hours to rest and relax your eyes.
  • Look off into the distance for about 20 seconds every 20 minutes to give your eyes a break.
  • Make the text larger on your computer screen to avoid straining to see small print.
  • Minimize the glare in your work. Consider using a screen glare filter.
  • Make the center of your screen about five inches below your eye level, and place the screen about an arm's length from your eyes.
